About Stephanie Sorrels

Who Am I

I am a medical Speech-Language Pathologist, Certified Brain Injury Specialist, and Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach with a particular passion for understanding how brain injury affects everyday life.

My work sits at the intersection of cognitive rehabilitation, brain health, patient education, and whole-person care. I help individuals better understand changes in attention, memory, executive functioning, processing speed, language, communication, and cognitive endurance, and connect those challenges to the responsibilities and activities that matter most to them.

Why I Do This Work

Concussion and brain injury can be incredibly confusing. A person may look well, receive normal results on conventional imaging, or be told that they should have recovered, while continuing to struggle with conversations, screens, work responsibilities, fatigue, sensory overload, organization, or daily routines.

I am drawn to this work because I want people to feel understood. I want them to have language for what they are experiencing, practical strategies they can use, and a clearer understanding of what support may be appropriate.

I believe education can be therapeutic in itself. When people understand their symptoms and recognize the patterns affecting their functioning, recovery can begin to feel less frightening and more manageable.

My Approach

Individualized

No two brain injuries, or lives are exactly alike. I consider each person’s symptoms, environment, responsibilities, strengths, health history, and individual goals when developing recommendations.

Practical

I connect clinical knowledge to real-world demands. The goal is not simply to perform well during a structured task, but to communicate effectively, manage responsibilities, return to meaningful roles, and participate more confidently in everyday life.

Whole-Person

My functional medicine health-coaching background informs my understanding of how sleep, nutrition, stress, gut-brain health, nervous-system regulation, movement, and daily routines may interact with brain function and recovery.

Collaboration Matters

Brain injury symptoms rarely fit neatly within one discipline. Meaningful recovery may require collaboration among speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, physicians, neuropsychologists, psychologists, physical and vestibular therapists, neuro-optometrists, and other professionals.

I value interdisciplinary communication and enjoy helping patients, providers, and legal teams connect clinical findings with the person’s actual functional challenges. My goal is to make complex information understandable and contribute a clear cognitive-communication and whole-person perspective.

Beyond the Credentials

Outside of my professional work, I love traveling with my husband, baking, moving my body through yoga/pilates/dancing, spending time outdoors with my dog, Beverly, and learning anything I can about the brain. Travel keeps me curious, movement helps me stay connected to the relationship between the brain and body, and Beverly is a daily reminder of the value of slowing down, getting outside, and being present. These parts of my life continue to shape the curiosity, warmth, and whole-person perspective I bring to my work.
